I was thinking of the similarity between the words hearth and heart, and how, indeed, the hearth is the heart of the house, its pulse, its lap, its warmth.  A hearth is the place where people gather, in silence or with words, to warm their bodies, to heal their hearts.  Hearths are what we come home to, where we can rest, where we can sit together mesmerized, inspired by the flickering blue-and-orange flames.  We are tribal animals and we find comfort—indeed, we find ourselves—in the warmth of one another.  Human beings need hearths, especially in hard times.
